SIR JOHN ROBERT BENNETT

John Bennett was born at St. John's, Newfoundland in 1866 and was educated at Bishop Field College. In 1881 he joined the C. F. Bennett Company as a clerk and later joined his brother's brewing business as a manager. He later became the President of the E. W. Bennett & Company and in 1902 he was elected to the St. John's municipal council.

In 1902 he was elected to represent the riding of St. John's West in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. He served twice as the Colonial Secretary of Newfoundland, 1913 - 1917 and again from 1924 - 1928. In 1917 he was appointed the Minister of Militia for Newfoundland. In 1923 he helped to organize the Liberal Labour-Progressive Party which lost the election to the Liberal Party led by Sir Richard Squires. When Squires government fell in 1924 Bennett was elected for the riding of Harbour Grace and served in the newly formed government of W. S. Monroe. Bennett was knighted in 1926 and died in 1941.
